Fátima Shrine

The Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima gives expression to the request of Our Lady of the Rosary, alluded to as early as August 13, 1917 and expressly stated in the apparition of October 13 of that year to Lucia de Jesus, Francisco Marto and Jacinta Marto: "I want to tell you that a chapel should be built here in my honor, for I am the Lady of the Rosary" (First Memoir of Sister Lucia). The little chapel was raised in 1919 on the place of the 1917 apparitions in the Cova da Iria, and since then, the Shrine space has been built in response to the significant influx of pilgrims.

The Shrine of Fatima is a place of pilgrimage that remembers its founding event, the apparitions of Our Lady to the three little shepherds. The pastoral care of pilgrims is a primordial element of its mission.

The Shrine of Fatima holds the message of the Fatima event. Its mission is the study and dissemination of this message, worked out as a means of evangelization in Portugal and in the world.

The Shrine of Fatima is, by express desire of the Apostolic See, a National Shrine.

In the Shrine of Fatima, it is important to know the places of the Apparitions - Capelinha, Loca do Cabeço, Poço do Arneiro and Valinhos; places of worship and prayer - BNSRF, BSST, Colonnade, Berlin Wall, Holm Oak, Crib, Museum, Monument to the Sacred Heart of Jesus; Places of formation and pastoral care - Centro Pastora de Paulo VI, Nossa Senhora das Dores Retreat House, Nossa Senhora do Carmo Retreat House - and places of memory and culture - Sanctuary Museum, Temporary Exhibition, Aljustrel Museum House (currently closed); Saint Francisco and Saint Jacinta Marto's House, Sister Lucia's House.
