In 2004, the International Congress of Religious and Sustainable Tourism (CITRyS) was born, thanks to the creativity of Rubén Moyano and the St Joseph Foundation in Campo Mourão, Brazil.
The congress began in 2006 and was held in different cities in Brazil. Its founders soon had the idea of expanding the event to other countries. With the contribution of participants from Uruguay, Chile, Bolivia, and Paraguay, the congress has become a significant milestone for the integration of tourism in MERCOSUR.
In 2021, the 16th edition of the congress was held at the Cathedral Museum in Pamplona, Spain, marking the first time the event was held in Europe. In 2022, two congresses were held, one in Uruguay and one in Colombia.
In 2023, the congress returned to Europe for its second edition, this time being held in Murcia and Caravaca de la Cruz, Spain. In 2024, the congress will once again be held in Europe, this time in Fátima, Portugal, on February 22 and 23, in parallel with the International Workshop on Religious Tourism (IWRT).
