“Come and Discover Torres Novas”

Located on the banks of the Almonda River, nestled between hills and valleys, the city of Torres Novas has much to offer. Inhabited since ancient times, it holds traces dating back to the Paleolithic era. Later, during the early stages of Roman expansion, the first villa was established, called Villa Cardilio, which was inhabited between the 1st and 4th centuries, from which magnificent tile panels have been recovered. In the 12th century, with the charter of D. Sancho I on October 1, 1190, the foundation of the county began. The Castle of Torres Novas is part of its built heritage, serving as a key defensive structure over the centuries and the stage for remarkable episodes, notably against Spanish invasions. In 1910, it was classified as a National Monument. According to myths and legends, it was said that the castle was connected, via a secret tunnel, to the village of Lapas, located 2 km away, in the so-called Cave of Lapas, which has yet to be found. This cave, “built” by man, was formed from tuff, which was extracted as constructions in the village developed.

For art lovers, the city boasts various tile panels and architectural styles, while the Carlos Reis Municipal Museum houses numerous works by local artists, including paintings and sculptures, as well as items from the Roman ruins of Villa Cardilio and remnants of the Paleolithic past.

In addition to numerous green spaces for the enjoyment of locals and visitors, the Paul do Boquilobo Natural Reserve, recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1981, offers opportunities for birdwatching, hiking, or mountain biking, allowing exploration of unique species of flora and fauna or simply enjoying nature.

Gastronomically, Torres Novas also presents significant richness and diversity. Known as the capital of the black fig, it hosts the National Fair of Dried Fruits, attracting visitors from all over the country and neighboring regions, bringing together producers, traders, and consumers in a vibrant atmosphere. Its most famous treats are head cakes and bean pastries from Ribeira Ruiva, which have achieved recognition as district finalists, each being among the seven best sweets in the district of Santarém in the “7 Wonders of Sweets from Portugal” contest in 2019.

Whether for just a few hours or for one or more days, come discover Torres Novas, a land of good people and good customs.
