HISTORY

Fortress city and bastion of the border, Guarda is the highest city in Portugal, built in an average quota just above a thousand meters of altitude. With a foundation consecrated by King Sancho I, who assigned his first foral on 27 November 1199, Guarda is heir to a rich and unique cultural heritage of more than 800 years of history.

From the Keep, the ultimate symbol of the entire defensive structure, you can enjoy an uneven view of the surrounding landscape. The Cathedral, a true icon of the city built between the 14th and 16th centuries, has constructive and aesthetic qualities that impose it as one of the largest monuments in the history of Portuguese architecture. In the streets of the Historic Center, you can discover marks of the ancestral coexistence between Christians and Jews, in one of the oldest and most important Jewish in Beira Interior.
